Men's Hair Loss Myths

Men’s Hair Loss Myths

We bet some will even surprise you!

How many times have you read something about hair loss and male pattern baldness and wondered if it was a myth or not? Well today we’re going to put some of those myths to bed and we’re betting some will even surprise you.

What you already know..

If you’re a man approaching middle age the threat of hair loss may be looming. But, here’s the thing.. All Men Lose Hair!

Men of a certain age are especially prone to hair loss, at least from the top of their heads.

Male pattern baldness, or the gradual thinning of hair on the scalp is typically hereditary. Typically. This happens because hormone levels change over a man’s lifetime, particularly starting at middle age- which is considered to be 35 years and older in hair loss years.

Other factors can also contribute to hair loss including illness and aging. Even overly aggressive grooming habits can contribute to hair loss in men. So be careful using hair dyes or too much gel and hairspray.

Common Male Pattern Baldness Myths:

Despite the large number of men who are losing their hair, there are a lot of myths and misinformation about how and why hair loss actually happens. Believe it or not, more than half of all men over the age of 50 have some degree of male pattern baldness.

Some businesses will even use scare tactics and myths to try to get you to buy their “miracle” products with the promise that it will help slow the process of hair loss; but sadly in the end, the hair loss will still happen.

Before we dig even further into this blog, for those of you that may be wondering what the best hair loss solution is- we highly recommend hair replacement systems over surgery or any harsh prevention and hair growth shampoos that are out there. The cost of a Hair Replacement System is 10x lower than surgery. Not to mention, you can sleep, shower, work out and be as active as ever without worry. In fact they’re typically known to last 6 months.

So now that you have a cost effective solution for your hair loss. Let’s get started and go over the misconceptions and myths about hair loss, and as I said above, put them to bed.

1. Wearing hats leads to baldness

You don’t need to hang up your favorite sports team hat just yet. There’s absolutely zero evidence to suggest that wearing hats — even on a daily basis — leads to hair loss or hair follicle damage. However, wearing hats that are dirty can lead to an infection which can increase the odds that you’ll lose some hair. So, just to be safe, make sure you throw your favorite hats in the wash after reading this.

2. Baldness is your mother’s father’s fault.

Don’t point your finger at mom or your grandfather just yet!

The mom’s lineage has long been blamed for male pattern baldness, but the reality is, hair loss is a genetic trait you can inherit from either or both parents.

Some people suggest paying attention to your older siblings and first cousins to see if baldness is a recurring trait. But, that’s just another misconception.

Baldness genes can also skip generations and are completely random in terms of which siblings (male or female) they will affect. These genes can even have very different effects on siblings in the same family. Meaning, if you have a twin brother that has hair loss problems this doesn’t necessarily mean that you’ll experience hair loss as well.

3. “Natural” supplements can promote hair regrowth.

Unfortunately, NO amount of vitamins or minerals can help regrow your hair. That rule also applies to myths that state that  certain herbs like stinging nettle and saw palmetto will help to regrow your hair. They don’t and won’t! In actuality, there have been studies that have shown that certain vitamins and supplements can actually contribute to hair loss- like vitamin A and selenium.

But, you can help keep the hair you already have on your head by making sure you eat a healthy diet and avoiding nutrient deficiencies.

4. Hair loss means your testosterone levels are too high!

This is actually one of the most common hair loss myths out there so it’s a good thing we’re covering it here!

Testosterone levels are technically irrelevant when it comes to losing hair, because testosterone does not cause hair loss. In fact, the amount of hair on your head has very little to do with the testosterone circulating in your bloodstream.

Male pattern baldness is actually due to hair follicle sensitivity which is caused by a byproduct of testosterone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT). The actions of the hormone DHT and the sensitivity of hair follicles to DHT is what causes hair loss.

The DHT, causes your hair follicles to shrink, and as they get smaller, the hair that grows back tends to be finer, thinner, and shorter.

5. Stress speeds up male pattern baldness.

This one is tricky…While traumatic and emotional events can trigger temporary hair loss, this type of hair loss is not the same as male pattern baldness, which is permanent.

When you experience trauma-induced hair loss your hair follicles press the hair-growth pause button. But, after the threat has passed your hair follicles resume their “normal” cycle of growth again.

6. Too much sun exposure will make you go bald.

This right here is the biggest hair loss myth out there! While there are plenty of reasons to steer clear of the sun, the threat of going bald is not one of them. Your follicles continue to function even when exposed to ultraviolet radiation from the sun, but your hair shaft may degrade and become brittle over time from years of continuous exposure. Think of a fishing boat captain’s hair.

7. Medication can stop hair loss.

This is a partial myth.

There will always be some new potential cure for baldness out there. Every year men worldwide spend billions of dollars trying to prevent hair loss with some kind of medication, “miracle” shampoo or pricey procedure. But, do any of them actually stop hair loss?

The truth is, there is no medication that just STOPS or cures hair loss and male pattern baldness altogether. But in some cases, it may be possible to prevent — or at least slow down — hair loss. Just keep in mind that this will vary from person to person depending on the underlying cause of each individual’s hair loss.

So yes, there are medications and treatments out there that can help slow and even temporarily stop hair loss but, –here’s the kicker– in order for them to work it requires the user to continually take the medication, use the shampoo or schedule recurring procedures indefinitely. Once the individual stops taking the medication,(or stops using the shampoo, or stops getting those procedures) the hair loss will just pick up where it left off -and fast!

So, as medication may be a temporary fix, it’s not a permanent one.

But don’t lose hope yet!

Like I mentioned above there’s a non-expensive alternative out there that’s immediate and undetectable and it’s called a Hair Replacement System. While this won’t slow or stop hair loss it’s an ultra-realistic look no one will ever know. The system is designed specifically for your head and the look you want.
